Zu Beginn des Jahres 2011, als das Volk in Daraa zu rebellieren begann, belagerten Soldaten des Assad-Regimes die Stadt und niemand durfte sie betreten oder verlassen. Am 29. April 2011 versuchten Menschen der umliegenden Dörfer, beladen mit Brot und Mehl, mit ihren Kindern und Familien in die Stadt hineinzukommen, aber Assads Soldaten feuerten auf die unbewaffneten Zivilisten, richteten ein schreckliches Blutbad an und nahmen Dutzende von Jugendlichen und Männern gefangen. Unter ihnen war auch der 13-jährige Junge „Hamza al-Khatib", dessen durch Folter und mit Schusswunden in Brust und beiden Armen übel zugerichteter Körper später seiner Familie zurückgegeben wurde. Sein Hals war gebrochen und außerdem war ihm sein Genital abgeschnitten worden.
