This Australia trip will involve teaching a new AlKauthar course "The Mirage of Atheism: Deconstructing the Atheist Narrative". It will also include delivering a range of lectures and engaging in outreach work to the wider community. I will be visiting Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra, insha'Allah (God-willing).Today in the early afternoon I delivered a short talk at the Medinah centre in Melbourne. In the evening I delivered a lecture addressing "Does Science Disprove Religion?" at the Hume Islamic Youth Centre (HIYC). The lecture addressed the definition of science, its scope and limitations, including the problems of induction and empiricism. The lecture addressed how Islamic teachings promote science and how historians of science bear testimony to this. I continued by explaining the multileveled and multilayered approach when discussion science and the Qur'an. In summary, this approach argues that the verses in the Qur'an that describe natural phenomena have multilayered meanings that can address various levels of understanding at different periods of time. Let me elaborate using an example. "And it is He who created the night and the day and the sun and the moon; all [heavenly bodies] in an orbit are swimming (yasbaḥūna)." Qur'an 21:33At the time of revelation (7th century) the word yasbaḥūna, which means swimming or floating - used to describe the motion of the Sun and the Moon - could be confirmed with the naked eye by a 7th century desert Arab. But the word also makes sense to us in the 21st century, as it can relate to today's scientific findings on celestial mechanics. Mustansir Mir, Professor of Islamic Studies at Youngstown State University, also makes this point,"The word yasbaḥūna (swim or float) in the verse 'And He is the One Who created the night and day, and the Sun and Moon – each swimming in an orbit' (Q 21:33) made good sense to seventh-century Arabs observing natural phenomena with the naked eye; it is equally meaningful to us in light of today's scientific findings [i.e. celestial mechanics]." Islam's Quantum Question: Reconciling Muslim Tradition and Modern Science. 2011, p. 152.]Interestingly, the above verse also mentions that the sun is floating or swimming in an orbit. This can address the 7th century primitive view that the sun was orbiting around the earth. But on closer inspection of the language used in the Qur'an, we can conclude that it also addresses the accurate 21st century view that the Sun has its own orbit. The Sun orbits the Milky Way, and according to scientists, it takes 226 million years to completely orbit around the centre of the Milky Way [http://www.universetoday.com/18028/sun-orbit/#ixzz2h7WinqFD].So from this perspective the Qur'an addresses various levels of understanding. However, the main purpose of these verses are to get people to think about the majesty and creative power of God in order to conclude that He deserves to be worshipped. These verses not there to provide any specific scientific details, hence the relative ambiguity of the words used. They are not scientific miracles because the meaning we attribute to the verses may not be the intended meaning, and the science may change over time. Notwithstanding this, these verses do highlight an interesting feature of the Qur'an.This approach also appreciates that there can be some scientific conclusions that contradict the Qur'an. As I discussed in the lecture, the problems of induction and empiricism show how science is not static but dynamic. It changes over time. There can always be a future observation that can alter our previous conclusions on things. This is the beauty of science. Therefore, if something today contradicts the Qur'an it doesn't make the Divine book wrong or inaccurate. Since we can prove the Qur'an's Divine authorship using various rational arguments, and that science can change based on future observations, then it is more reasonable to assert that the science will "catch up" with the Qur'an. Obviously there is more to it then that, for instance a reconciliation between the scientific conclusion and the Qur'an should be done, however it that is not possible then the above would be entirely reasonable.
