Selbst ein Volk wie die Mänder, die seit Jahrhunderten niedergetreten waren, zeigen, sobald sie, wie in Amerika aufatmen dürfen, einen denkbar fanatischen Rassenhass.[..] Einen großen Kontrast zwischen dem Abend- und Morgenlande, der jedem Beobachter direkt auffallen müsste, ist das Fehlen von Kränkungen und Zurücksetzungen, die einen so großen Teil des europäischen Daseins einnehmen und einen so tiefen Schatten auf das dortige Leben werfen. Sie umgeben den Europäer in seiner frühesten Kindheit; sie überfallen ihre Familienkreise; sie beherrschen ihre gesellschaftlichen Versammlungen; ihr Glück ist nicht frei von ihnen, und im Unglück sind sie der Stachel. Unter den Muselmanen sieht man nie einen Menschen zurückgesetzt. Jeder hat seine bestimmte Stellung, das Kind sowohl wie der Erwachsene, im Schulzimmer, wie in öffentlicher Gesellschaft. Es gibt dort kein solches öffentliches Zusammendrängen, wo der Eine nur dadurch Auszeichnung gewinnen kann, dass Viele zurückgesetzt werden. Solche Versammlungen sind die Folge einer großen Summe von Eitelkeit und Eigenliebe in einem Volke und zielen darauf hin, diese Ursachen wieder zu erzeugen. Aus diesen Ursachen entsteht ein großer Teil der europäischen Rastlosigkeit und Tätigkeit. Diese Tätigkeit veranlasst die Verwickelung der Gesetze, die Entgegenstellung der Meinungen, die Zufälle und Notwendigkeiten des materiellen und politischen Zustandes der abendländischen Welt. Dieses Streben verursacht bei dem Einzelnen eine ungeheure Summe von Tätigkeit, welche nutzlos nur dazu verwendet wird, den Wirkungen der Tätigkeit Anderer entgegen zu arbeiten. Der Muselman steht nur auf, wenn er einen Gang zu machen hat. Er arbeitet nie, als wenn er etwas zu tun hat. Er spricht nie, als wenn er etwas zu sagen hat. Er hegt keine Meinung ohne Grund und fällt kein Urteil ohne Not und Recht. Er kann ruhig und schweigend für sich allein sitzen ohne an Aufregung zu leiden und ohne sich zu stellen, als verachte er seine Mitmenschen. Sorglos um die Missgeschicke von morgen, freut er sich des Daseins von heute. Obgleich niemand so streitkräftig das verteidigt, was er besitzt, so setzt er sich doch nie in die Lage, das zu gefährden, was er hat, auf die Hoffnung hin, etwas Besseres zu erhalten. Sein häusliches, sein Haremsleben, bildet sein Gemüt. İn diesem Gemüt ist sein gesellschaftlicher und sein politischer Charakter zu finden. Ohne diesen häuslichen Charakter ganz zu kennen und voll zu verstehen, ist alles, was man über politische Zustände des Orients schreibt, nur leeres Gerede."
