The question of those who participate in the investigation of the assassination crime that targeted Hezbollah leader Hassan Lakkis last week has turned from: "Did the Israeli Mossad, logistically, shoot at Lakkis?" into: "Why the Israelis decided to assassinate a target by shooting?", a well informed source told Assafir daily newspaper Tuesday.
Sources familiar with the progress of investigations asserted that «Mossad» took over the operation by setting the goal, planning, supervising and implementation on ground, while it has been circulated previously that the Zionist intelligence service hired a local third party to secure logistics, while keeping the role of information for its own members.
Investigators are now certain that the shooters are two persons, yet investigations focus on discovering the number of participants in the survey and transportation and their identities.
According to Assafir, investigations were able to determine the route walked by perpetrators: In the beginning, it has been believed they went through St. Therese Street due to its proximity to the building in which Lakkis was dwelling, but the current data suggests that they stepped from a car parked at Bolivar Camille Chamoun.
Investigators are also working on content of surveillance cameras installed at the Bolivar and the surrounding region, in addition to the communication data:
"After that, we can reach a serious filament regarding the path taken by those involved before and after the assassination," a source told Assafir.
No one in the local security services could discover so far the main reason behind using bullets in the assassination. Some believe that it was a message carrying various security hints, and some others refuse to speculate, waiting to find out the reason after concluding the investigations.
Investigators say that Lakkis assassination seemed professional at the field level. However, reconnaissance was not a difficult mission. Mossad has benefited from a major gap providing that Lakkis had stayed in his second house in Hadat neighborhood for not less than three years. Thus, whom who wants to assassinate him must first determine the easiest target.
Investigators say that Israelis use "cluster networks" in terms of collaboration with agents, i.e. they can entrust more than one spy, not a one of those spies knows that another one else is doing the job itself. Sources told Assafir that Lakkis did not change his four-wheel car for more than a year, knowing that he had to resort to taxis at certain times, just like the leader martyr Hajj Imad Mughniyeh.
In addition to that, another question emerges: How the Israelis dare to risk and carry out a similar operation logistically? It seems unlikely to some officers that 'Israel' has committed the murder even though they confess it was 'professional', yet some of those participating in the investigation say "the revealed data confirms that 'Israel' is guilty, and investigation on data of traveling to and from Lebanon during certain days - whether by sea or by air - is underway as well."
Some veteran officers recalled previous assassinations and agents recruiting operations, which revealed that the Israelis can get in and out of Lebanon "in an unbelievable easiness," arguing that the agent Nasser Nader admitted his infiltration from Lebanon to Occupied Palestine around 17 times in order to meet his Israeli operators before and after the assassination of Hezbollah leader Ghaleb Awali.
According to well informed officers, checking the identities of the people sent by Mossad to Lebanon earlier in the year and after the May 2000 liberation reveals that most of them are not Israelis, but they are holding several nationalities, and that 'Israel' can "disown them once the mission doomed to failure."
However, it is not secret that agents who are used for carrying out several missions, most notably of reconnaissance nature, are Lebanese since more than ten years.

اعتبر المدير السابق لوكالة المخابرات المركزية الاميركية (سي آي ايه) مايكل هايدن الخميس ان انتصار بشار الاسد في سوريا قد يكون "الافضل بين ثلاث سيناريوهات مرعبة جدا جدا" لا يتضمن اي منها انتصار المعارضة.
وفي كلمة امام المؤتمر السنوي السابع حول الارهاب الذي نظمه معهد "جيمس تاون"، اشار هايدن الى ما يعتبره السيناريوهات الثلاثة الممكنة لتطور الوضع في سوريا موضحا انها جميعا "مخيفة بشكل رهيب".
وقال ان احد الاحتمالات هو ان "ينتصر الاسد"، مضيفا "يجب ان اقول لكم انه في حال تحقق هذا الامر وهو امر مخيف اكثر مما يظهر، اميل الى الاعتقاد بان هذا الخيار سيكون الافضل بين هذه السيناريوهات المرعبة جدا جدا لنهاية الصراع، الوضع يتحول كل دقيقة الى اكثر فظاعة".
واعتبر مع ذلك ان المخرج الاكثر احتمالا حاليا هو "اننا ذاهبون الى تفتت البلاد بين فصائل متخاصمة".
وقال "هذا يعني ايضا نهاية سايكس-بيكو، وهذا يؤدي الى تفتت دول وجدت بشكل اصطناعي في المنطقة بعد الحرب العالمية الاولى".
واضاف "اخشى بقوة تفتت الدولة السورية، سوف يؤدي هذا الامر الى ولادة منطقة جديدة بدون حوكمة على تقاطع الحضارات"، مشيرا الى ان "كل دول المنطقة وخصوصا لبنان والاردن والعراق سوف تتأثر بهذا الوضع".
وختم مايكل هايدن بالقول "لا استطيع ان اتخيل سيناريو اكثر رعبا من الذي يجري حاليا في سوريا".

US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel described as 'dangerous and complicated' the setbacks which the foreign-backed opposition in Syria has been witnessing.
Last week, an extremist opposition group, the so-called "Islamic Front," seized the Bab al-Hawa crossing on the Turkish borChuck Hagelder and weapons warehouses from the "Free Syrian Army," which is led by General Selim Idriss, who reportedly fled Syria.
"I think what has occurred here in the last couple of days is a clear reflection on how complicated and dangerous this situation is and how unpredictable it is," Hagel said at a joint press conference with Singapore's defense minister.
"We continue to support General Idriss and the moderate opposition," Hagel said.
"But this is a problem, I mean, what has occurred here, a big problem. And we're going to have to work through it and manage through it with General Idriss and the moderate opposition."
He added that "when the moderate opposition is set back, that's not good."
Asked who was in control of the arms depots, Hagel said: "We're evaluating right now. We're assessing what has happened, where we are."
He said there were "very dangerous elements" in the opposition that "complicates our support" for it.
Delivery of non-lethal assistance would be withheld "until, first of all, we can get a clear assessment of what has happened," Hagel said.
The fractured opposition included Al-Qaeda and other terrorist groups, he said, adding: "So it's not a matter of just an easy choice between the good guys and the bad guys here."

The commander of the foreign-backed opposition's main military wing "Free Syrian Army", General Salim Idris has fled the country after extremist militants from the so-called "Islamic Front" took over key bases and warehouses belonging to FSA.Salim Idris
Idris flew to the Qatari capital of Doha Sunday after fleeing to Turkey, Wall Street Journal quoted US officials as saying.
"He fled as a result of the Islamic Front taking over his headquarters," a senior U.S. official said.
An "Islamic Front" spokesman said Idris fled to Turkey.
The New York Times said Idris flew temporarily to Doha but was now back in Turkey, where he has a house.
The 13-month-old US-backed "Syrian National Coalition, which supports the FSA, is based in Doha.
The Obama administration is urging Idris to return to Syria, the US officials told the Journal.
The "Islamic Front" seized depots belonging to the FSA near the Turkish border last weekend, before taking control of the Bab al-Tawa crossing itself on Dec. 10, according to monitors. The seizure prompted the United States and Britain to suspend non-lethal aid to rebels in northern Syria.

The Russian president Vladimir Putin considered that the world's responsible decisions regarding the Syrian and the Iranian files have prevented chaos, adding that further efforts would spread peace and stability in the Putinentire region.
"In Syria the world community had to make a joint and fateful decision. It was either the continuation of the degradation of the world order, the rule of the right of might, the right of the fist, the multiplication of chaos; or to collectively take responsible decisions," Putin explained, praising the world, Russia included, for taking the second path.
It was Russia's involvement that to a large degree helped to prevent military intervention in Syria and paved the way for the deal involving the destruction of Syria's chemical weapons arsenal.
If this hadn't happened, the Syrian conflict might have escalated and impacted countries far away from the Middle East, Putin said.

فورين بوليسي: السعودية تشتري أسلحة أميركية مضادة للدروع.. والوجهة سورية
أعلنت وزارة الدفاع الأميركية "البنتاغون" عن موافقتها تلبية طلب السعودية لشراء 15 ألف وحدة من منظومة صاروخية متحركة مضادة للدروع، تبلغ قيمتها الإجمالية ما ينوف على مليار دولار اميركي. واوضحت صحيفة "فورين بوليسي" ان الصفقة المزمع موافقة الكونغرس عليها تفوق ما لدى الترسانة السعودية من أسلحة مماثلة للسنة الحالية والتي تعد بنحو 4 آلاف وحدة، وتتجاوز احتياجاتها الذاتية.
وأضافت "فورين بوليسي" ان العدد الضخم للمنظومة يشمل أحدث الصواريخ الموجهة حرارياً، من طراز "تاو TOW" التي تنتجها شركة رايثيون، مما يثير الشكوك لحاجة السعودية لهذا العدد الهائل، سيما وأنها لا تواجه تهديداً عسكرياً مرئياً. وأردفت أن الفرضية بمواجهة محتملة مع إيران سيكون عمادها سلاح البحرية والطائرات المقاتلة، الأمر الذي يرجح أن قوات المعارضة السورية التي يجري تدربها في الأردن هي الوجهة الحقيقية لتلك الأسلحة.
واستدركت بالقول إن السعودية تدرك القيود الأميركية المفروضة على تسليم الأسلحة لطرف ثالث، مما يعزز اعتقاد الأوساط العسكرية الأميركية ان السعودية بصدد استبدال مخزونها من أسلحة مماثلة تم شراؤها من مصادر غير أميركية تسلمها لقوات المعارضة، وتحديث ترسانتها.
