NBC Extracts from Snowden Interview: US Had Proper Intelligence ahead of 9/11
NBC News didn't broadcast the full interview with former intelligence contractor Edward Snowden, but only aired a quarter of it. Unaired excerpts now online show that the network neglected to air critical statements about the 9/11 attacks.
NBC condensed roughly four hours of conversation between journalist Brian Williams and Snowden into a 60-minute time slot.
During an analysis of the full interview afterwards, howNBC interview with Snowdenever, the network showed portions of the interview that didn't make it into the primetime broadcast, including remarks from the former National Security Agency contractor in which he questioned the American intelligence community's inability to stop the September 11, 2001 attacks.
In response to a question from Williams concerning a "non-traditional enemy," Al-Qaeda, and how to prevent further attacks from that organization and others, Snowden suggested that United States had the proper intelligence ahead of 9/11 but failed to act.
"You know, and this is a key question that the 9/11 Commission considered. And what they found, in the post-mortem, when they looked at all of the classified intelligence from all of the different intelligence agencies, they found that we had all of the information we needed as an intelligence community, as a classified sector, as the national defense of the United States to detect this plot," Snowden said. "We actually had records of the phone calls from the United States and out. The CIA knew who these guys were. The problem was not that we weren't collecting information, it wasn't that we didn't have enough dots, it wasn't that we didn't have a haystack, it was that we did not understand the haystack that we have."
"The problem with mass surveillance is that we're piling more hay on a haystack we already don't understand, and this is the haystack of the human lives of every American citizen in our country," Snowden continued. "If these programs aren't keeping us safe, and they're making us miss connections — vital connections — on information we already have, if we're taking resources away from traditional methods of investigation, from law enforcement operations that we know work, if we're missing things like the Boston Marathon bombings where all of these mass surveillance systems, every domestic dragnet in the world didn't reveal guys that the Russian intelligence service told us about by name, is that really the best way to protect our country? Or are we — are we trying to throw money at a magic solution that's actually not just costing us our safety, but our rights and our way of life?

Lebanon's Mashnouq: Syrians Lose Refugee Status If They Enter Syria as of June 1
.In a statement by the Lebanese Interior and Municipalities Minister, Nuhad al-Mashnouq's media bureau on Saturday, it warned Syrian refugees against entering Syria effective Sunday, under risk of losing their refugee status.
"In process of regulating the entry and exit of Syrian nationals into Lebanese territories, all displaced Syrians registered with the UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) are to refrain from entering into Syria as of 1/6/2014, under penalty of losing their status as refugees in Lebanon," the statement stressed.
"The Interior Ministry hopes for compliance with this measure for the safety of displaced Syrians in Lebanon, as well as preserving Lebanon's security and the relationship between displaced Syrians-Lebanese citizens in preventing any friction or mutual provocation," the statement added.
This decision comes three days before Syria is to witness presidential elections, what raises questions about its political dimensions and intentions.

US, Taliban swap prisoners
US President Barack Obama says his administration reached a prisoner swap deal with the Taliban militant group in Afghanistan.
The deal led to the release of Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl, the American soldier held captive in Afghanistan for nearly five years, The New York Times reported.
In exchange, American authorities released five Taliban prisoners held at the US-run Guantanamo detention facility in Cuba, the report said.
The 28-year-old Bergdahl, who was captured by the Taliban in June 2009, was handed over to American Special Operations forces inside Afghanistan on Saturday by a group of 18 Taliban members, the Times said, citing US officials.
Officials said Bergdahl was in good condition. He was transferred to US-run Bagram Airbase near Kabul, where he will fly back home.
In a statement, President Obama hailed the Emir of Qatar for mediating the release.
Qatar will take the custody of the five Guantanamo prisoners, who will be subject to security restrictions, including a one-year travel ban.
The Times said talks on the exchange resumed in earnest about a week ago with Qatari officials who were acting as intermediaries for the Taliban.
Obama personally telephoned the soldier's parents on Saturday, shortly after Sergeant Bergdahl was transferred to the American military, officials said.
The sergeant's parents said in a statement: "We were so joyful and relieved when President Obama called us today to give us the news that Bowe is finally coming home! We cannot wait to wrap our arms around our only son."
The Taliban on Wednesday condemned Obama's decision to keep thousands of troops in Afghanistan beyond the 2014 withdrawal deadline.
"Now that Obama has announced that he will keep around 10,000 troops until the end of 2016 and continue their occupation, Afghanistan Islamic Emirate condemns it and considers it a violation of sovereignty, religion and human rights," said a statement, using the militants' name for the country.
Obama confirmed Tuesday that the 32,000-strong US deployment in Afghanistan would be scaled back to around 9,800 by the start of 2015.
Those forces would be halved by the end of 2015 before eventually being reduced to a normal embassy presence with a security assistance component by the end of 2016, according to AFP.

Ukraine Slams Russia: Moscow Hasn't Recognized New President Yet
Ukraine slammed Russia on Saturday, accusing Moscow of unleashing a global propaganda campaign to persuade global powers not to recognize an election that gave the presidency to a pro-Western tycoon.

Obviously, the Russian Federation doesn't have legal grounds to question the election's legitimacy," Andriy Deshchytsya wrote in an opinion piece published in Saturday's edition of the English-language Kyiv Post.
"The massive... information campaign Kremlin has launched these days, with an avalanche of doubletalk and fake news, signals one thing -- this is Russia's last chance to try shifting the balance of international public opinion," he wrote.
Russia on Friday accused Ukraine of breaching the 1949 Geneva Conventions protecting civilians in wartime by killing and wounding peaceful citizens during its seven-week "anti-terrorist operation" in the separatist industrial regions of Lugansk and Donetsk.
And a furious information campaign unleashed by Russia's state media portrays Kiev protesters as "fascists" and accuses the army of unleashing a "punitive operation" -- the term once used to portray Nazi atrocities during World War II.
For its part, Washington praised Ukraine for showing utmost "restraint" and accused the pro-Russian militias of "murder, kidnapping, and looting".
"We have a fundamental disagreement with the Russians about what the Ukrainian government is doing and the validity of their own right to maintain calm and order in their own country," US State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said.
"And in our view, since the beginning of the unrest, while we've seen numerous human rights abuses by the separatists, including murder, kidnapping, and looting, the Ukrainian government has, continues to have, the responsibility to enforce law and order on its territory."

Syria set to hold presidential election
Ninety-five percent of Syrian expatriates have taken part in the presidential election as the country gets ready for the vote inside Syria.
The country's electoral commission made the announcement on Saturday as preparations were underway to make the vote a success.
"The president of the foreign ministry's central electoral committee said that voting took place in 43 embassies of the Syrian Arab Republic, and the participation rate by registered voters had exceeded 95 percent," official SANA news agency said.
Some countries, however, have dismissed the election.
Syrian First Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Miqdad accused the countries of "violating all conventions and human rights."
Meanwhile, Lebanon announced that Syrian refugees would lose their refugee status if they return home ahead of the election.
Syria has been gripped by deadly violence since March 2011. Over 160,000 people have reportedly been killed and millions displaced due to the violence fueled by the foreign-backed militants.
According to reports, the Western powers and their regional allies -- especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey -- are supporting the militants operating inside Syria.

Israel deprives al-Quds Palestinians of running water
Tens of thousands of Palestinian residents in East al-Quds (Jerusalem) have spent three months without running water, despite petitions and calls from human rights bodies after an Israeli water utility company stopped supplies in March.
Hagihon, Jerusalem's water utility company, stopped regular supplies of running water to several neighborhoods in occupied East al-Quds, such as Shu'fat Refugee Camp, Ras Khamis, Ras Sh'hadeh and Dahiyat a-Salam, said a statement from the website of B'Tselem, the Israeli Information Center for Human Rights in the Occupied Territories.
The camps are located inside al-Quds's municipal boundaries and isolated from the rest of the city by the Separation Barrier, RT reported Saturday.
According to B'Tselem, some households in these camps "have been completely cut off from the water supply" while others "receive water intermittently."
"As for the rest, the water pressure in the pipes is so low that the water does not reach the faucets," says the statement.
As a result, between 60,000 and 80,000 Palestinians, the majority of whom are "permanent Israeli residents," have been left without a regular water supply, adds the organization.
According to B'Tselem, the fact that people have to live without a proper water supply is but "another outcome of the severe and ongoing neglect of the residents in the Jerusalem neighborhoods separated by the Separation Barrier from the rest of East Jerusalem."
"The construction of the barrier and the isolation of these neighborhoods have led to a state of neglect even more severe than that endured by East Jerusalem neighborhoods for decades," says the group.
Meanwhile, the local residents continue looking for running water in the camps. Families have no choice but to buy bottled water and limit their consumption – drinking, showering and laundry – to minimum.
"Every other week, I take the kids to my family's home in Ras al-'Amud [Palestinian neighborhood in East al-Quds] to shower. We go by bus and it takes us an hour to get there," Linda Abu Rajeb told B'Tselem.
When the running water was stopped back in March, people spent at least three weeks calling the Hagihon Company and the al-Quds Municipality to restore the water supply in their neighborhoods.
On March 25, local residents, community leaders and the Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI) wrote a petition to the Israeli High Court of Justice over negligence that has cut water supplies to tens of thousands of people.
"This is a humanitarian crisis of the first degree, and infringes on the right to water, dignity and health, especially of children and infants, the elderly, the sick and persons with disabilities," said the petition.
According to ACRI, the water infrastructure in the affected areas can support only 15, 000 people, while there are more than 80,000 in the camps.

Fire razes Syrian refugee tents in east Lebanon
A fire has broken out in a Syrian refugee camp in the Bekaa Valley town of Jdita, destroying several makeshift homes and tents.
The blaze which raged across the camp on Friday dawn was brought under control after destroying dozens of tents.
According to some local media reports, the blaze destroyed 17 tents.
Lebanon's Internal Security Forces arrived at the scene of the fire and launched an investigation to determine the cause.
No causalities were reported during the incident.

NAM condemns insurgent atrocities in Syria
Foreign Ministers of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) have censured the crimes committed by foreign-backed terrorists in Syria, underlining their support for a political solution to the persisting crisis in the Arab country.
At the 17th meeting of the Foreign Ministers of NAM which was held in the Algerian capital Algiers with the participation of Syria, the NAM member states also rejected all forms of western sanctions against the Syrian people.
The ministers asserted in "Algiers Declaration" which is the final statement issued by the meeting, rejection of all forms of sanctions imposed on NAM member states for political reasons and expressed concern over the unilateral sanctions imposed by the US on Syria.
They reiterated that all measures taken by the Israeli occupation forces in the occupied Syrian Golan are null and void.
The ministers further condemned in the strongest terms the Israeli aggression against Syria in 2013 and stressed that such acts of aggression are flagrant violation of the international law.
Syria's Assistant Foreign and Expatriates Minister Hussam al-Din Ala said that the interference in the country's internal affairs and the violation of their sovereignty were made under various pretexts, such as what they refer to as the right of humanitarian interference and the protection responsibility.

Die #Tawaghit (Götzen) sind zahlreich, und ihre Köpfe sind fünf:1. Iblis (der Satan), möge Allah ihn verfluchen.2. Derjenige, der angebetet wird und gefallen daran findet.3. Derjenige, der die Menschen aufruft, ihn anzubeten.4. Derjenige, der behauptet Wissen über Ghayb (das Verborgene) zu haben.5. Derjenige, der nach etwas anderem richtet, als das, was Allah herab gesandt hat.
Der Beweis ist die Aussage des Erhabenen:„Es gibt keinen Zwang im Glauben. (Der Weg der) Besonnenheit istnunmehr klar unterschieden von (dem der) Verirrung. Wer also falsche Götterverleugnet, jedoch an Allah glaubt, der hält sich an der festesten Handhabe,bei der es kein Zerreißen gibt. Und Allah ist Allhörend und Allwissend."(Surah al-Baqarah 2, Vers 256)
