A Bisht (Arabic: بِشت, Persian: پُشت) is a traditional Arabic men's cloak popular in Arabia (mostly in the Peninsula, the Khalij, Sham, but excluding Yemen for example and the rest of the Arab world). Now it's funny how many Iranian (in particular Persian) chauvinists look down to everything that is apparently Arabic. Little do these ignorants know that the two neighbours (Arabia and Persia) share a lot of customs, food, vocabulary (Khaliji Arabic is heavily influenced by Persian/Farsi) with each other, including traditional clothing. The Bisht is a good example. Most Arabs even think it's a pure Arab thing. It's not. Actually it's (originally) a Persian thing that has become an Arab custom. Basically the Persians (most of them at least) have abondened it and the Arabs have turned it into some high class dress, only worn on special occasions (all sorts of celebrations, also by officials, on TV, by scholars, elders etc.). As the name implies (sound Persian, doesn't it?), the origin of the name Bisht is purely Persian. The meaning of Bisht is originally derived from Pusht (Persian: پُشت). In Persian, Pusht simply means "Behind", a cloak is clothing to be worn from behind (Arabic source: ناصر حسين العبودي في كتابه (الأزياء الشعبية الرجالية في دولة الإمارات وسلطنة عمان ). The type of men-wear is imported from Persia over the time by Persian/Iranian people visiting and trading between Persia and the Arabia Peninsula. Arabs never worse cloth like that (the closest to it might be some kind of cloaks as the people of Yemen wore, as suggested in some hadith). The irony: The only people who were the Bisht in Iran are the Shia clergy and of course the Arabs of Iran (Ahwazis and some Hormozgani Arab tribes). Sunni scholars of Iran to a lesser extent. The thing is though, the Bisht is called by a proper Arabic term in Iran, which is 'Aba (العباءة) where as most Arabs call it by it's Persian name outside Iran.
