It's yet worse once we think that they are contradictory. Even if we pretend it doesn't exist, deep within there ensues a conflict. After all, our nature (fitra) is human, and religion came to perfect humanity, not to confuse it or eradicate it! Take for example the issue of violence. Many people may think that religion is inherently violent. Then they have to deal with an inner conflict, an inner voice that says this can't be, this is not sitting well with my Fitra. Thank God, Islam is the religion of Fitra. But that's only half the answer. What we fail many times to do is separate between religion itself and the reading of religion. The reading of religion cannot be divorced from the ecosystem of the era we live in. If for example we live at a time of turbulence, of tyranny, of graphic violence, our reading of religion will be affected by it, to use a mild term. Certain people's obsession with the "violent" passages, whether done by a Muslim or anti-Muslim, will result in one thing - losing sight of the bigger picture of the scripture, or even redefining the priority of the scripture. A pretty dangerous and scary thing if you think about it. There are definitely way more passages about Mercy. Allah said that "My Mercy has encompassed everything". But how many times do we hear that? His Names are derived from Mercy but no Name is derived from punishment, or wrath. This is because one is permanent and the other is temporary. One is the rule and the other is the exception. In fact, His Mercy has overcome His Wrath as mentioned in the Hadith. So how come we turned this completely around? And how come we are so disproportionate when we teach and preach those concepts? The purpose here is not to fully discuss the topic of mercy and violence. This was just an example. The purpose of my post is that, whenever a reading is confusing or questionable, we err on the side of Fitra. This is because, a correct reading of a true religion can never go against the un-corrupted Fitra (i.e. our innate human nature).
